On the CEFR, French C2 means fluency – this is the ultimate goal. I usually know someone is still a beginner in French when they tell me: “I understand a lot but I can't speak”. I know they are advanced when they say: “I still can't understand everything !”

C2 level is the second stage of the CEFR 'proficient [language] user' category. At this level, the student should be able to read, understand and write any type of document, even specialized texts like academic articles. They will also be able to express themselves as well as a native speaker.

C2 level: 1000 to 1200 hours of learning. This level is focused on mastering the language, making you able to communicate in really specific situations and fields of study.

Level C2 corresponds to proficient users of the language, i.e. those able to perform complex tasks related to work and study.

C2 (Proficiency) is the top level you can achieve on the CEFR scale.

You can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. You can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.
