English level A1 is the first level of English in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), a definition of different language levels written by the Council of Europe. In everyday speech, this level would be called “beginner”, and indeed, that is the official level descriptor in the CEFR, also used by EF SET.

At the end of the English A1 level you will be able to: form sentences, ask and answer simple questions; master the basic skills of writing and reading simple texts; understand intelligible English speech and understand the meaning of some phrases on topics that you are familiar with.

Learners who achieve A1 Elementary level can: understand and use very common everyday expressions and simple phrases for immediate needs. introduce themselves and other people and can ask and answer questions about personal details, such as where they live, things they have and people they know.
